Orderly books, 1778-1779.

Orderly books, July 23, 1778 - March 1, 1779. The first volume, dated July 23, 1778 - December 31, 1778, is accompanied by a typed copy. They are dated from various places in New York and New Jersey, principally White Plains, Fredericksburg and Pluckemin. They contain headquarters and brigade orders, dealing with courts-martial, hygiene in camp, shortages of shoes and clothes, and instructions on uniforms. The second volume, dated August 24, 1778 - September 13, 1778, also contains an itinerary of the brigade's movements from September 20, 1776 - December 31, 1778. The pages not used for orders, which make up the bulk of the volume, were used for notes, mostly in pencil and barely legible, many apparently obituaries and extracts from newspaper stories on current events in the late eighteenth century; dates range from the 1760s to 1786.
